Hospitality : Comedy of Errors
Part of my role during pre-opening is to interview applicants for vacant positions and one common term new candidates would state is that they are "passionate" to what they do no matter what position in the Industry they would be in. The next question I ask is "What is so important to you in the role that you are willing to suffer?" and 80% of the time I get a blank stare. Let me be more clear why I ask this question by taking the definition of the word "Passion" from Wiktionary - From Middle English passion, borrowed from Old French passion (and in part from Old English passion), from Latin passio (“suffering”), noun of action from perfect passive participle passus (“suffered”), from deponent verb patior . In Latin PASSIO means suffering hence the question.
I see that a percentage of individuals who decides to work in the hospitality industry would not have the slightest clue how they can fall in love with the work they do whether they are working in hotels, restaurant or hospitals. It is something that one needs to experience before they can say that they are passionate to what they do within the hospitality sector.
